BackgroundThe baseline status of trace metals in adrenal tissue is unresolved, while the elemental profile for any adrenal pathology has not been examined so far. This study aimed to determine the baseline status of important toxic (Ni, As, Cd, Pb, Th, U) and essential trace elements (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in healthy adrenal tissues (HATs) as well as to examine whether there are alterations in the elemental composition of adenomatous adrenal tissues (AATs). Furthermore, this study aimed to find potential trace metals that could play a role in the pathogenesis of adrenal adenoma (AA).MethodsThe study included 45 patients diagnosed with AA. Impacts of relevant parameters such as gender, age, smoking habits and nodular sizes were considered. All samples were subjected to microwave digestion and the trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsThis is the first study that provided an insight into the elemental status of HATs. It was also shown that AATs had altered trace metal contents. Compared to HATs, the most significant findings were related to the high content of essential (Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) and Pb as a non-essential metal. Although gender, age and smoking habits had a modest effect on metal profiles, the most significant alterations were related to the nodular diameter above 4 cm, indicating that the growth of benign tumor could influence changes in elemental composition.ConclusionFor the first time the baseline contents of essential and toxic trace metals in HATs were determined. The results of this study may highlight the role of toxic and essential trace metals in AAs and could provide new insights into the molecular basis of pathophysiological changes caused by the hazardous effects of trace metals on adrenal structure and function.  相似文献

BackgroundThe incidence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has been growing rapidly and is rising to pandemic proportions. Although obesity is a primary risk factor for the enhancement of these conditions, not all obese individuals develop metabolic syndrome, indicating that the risk for developing MetS is impacted by other genetic and/or environmental factors such as heavy metals. Therefore, the present study focused on the association between exposures to heavy metal and MetS.MethodsUrine samples were collected from 150 participants (75 patients with MetS and 75 healthy participants), which were used from Hoveyzeh Cohort center. To make a quantitative comparison between the two groups, Man-Whitney nonparametric test was used. The logistic regression was performed adjusted for age, demographic, lifestyle factor, physical activity, occupational history and urine creatinine.ResultsThe results of logistic regression showed that OR and 95 % CI for Cd, Pb, Sr, As and Fe concentration were still significant after adjusting for urine creatinine. Moreover, there was a relationship between Cd and Pb levels and waist circumstance (WC). After adjusting for urine creatinine, age, sex, occupation, smoking status, education and place of residence, only Pb concentration was showed a significant association with systolic blood pressure (SBP). The subjects with high urine level of Cd had the high odds (OR: 6.273; 95 % Cl: 1.783–22.070) of MetS and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C). The relationship between As concentration and high fasting blood sugars confirmed the previous evidence suggesting that high As level can cause diabetes.ConclusionThese results indicated that outbreak of MetS and its component are associated with heavy metal concentrations in urine.  相似文献

Transition and lanthanide metal complexes have rich photophysical properties that can be used for cellular imaging, biosensing and phototherapy. One of the applications of such luminescent compounds is the detection and visualisation of nucleic acids. In this brief review, we survey the recent literature on the use of luminescent metal complexes (including ReI, RuII, OsII, IrIII, PtII, EuIII and TbIII) as DNA optical probes, including examples of compounds that bind selectively to non-duplex DNA topologies such as quadruplex, i-motif and DNA mismatches. We discuss the applications of metal-based luminescent complexes in cellular imaging, including time-resolved microscopy and super-resolution techniques. Their applications in biosensing and phototherapy are briefly mentioned in the relevant sections.  相似文献

PurposeEnvironmental factors may affecting reproductive function reduction and embryonic development. Couples who are exposed to heavy metals for a long time may affect the outcome of in vitro fertilization (IVF). To evaluate the effect of elements on IVF outcomes, a total of 195 couples undergoing IVF were included in this study.MethodsElements including V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Ba, Hg, Tl, Pb were measured in serum and follicular fluid (FF) samples of female and semen samples of male by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Multiple linear regression were applied to evaluate the association between metal elements and semen quality parameters and the number of oocytes in MII stage. Poisson regression and the robust variance estimation of the generalized estimation equation were used to evaluate the association between elements and IVF outcomes.ResultsThe statistical results showed that Cr had a significant negative correlation with total sperm concentration (TSC) and total motile sperm count (TMC), the correlation coefficients were -0.52 (-0.27∼1.43) and -0.4(-1.24, 0.45), respectively. At the same time, Ba was significantly correlated with TSC and TMC, the correlation coefficients were 0.1(-0.15∼0.34) and 0.12(-0.13, 0.36), respectively. Cr, Ba and Pb in follicular fluid (FF) had a significant positive correlation with the number of oocytes in MII stage. The correlation coefficients were 3.15 (0.79, 5.52), 1.54 (-0.27, 3.36), 12.27 (7.49, 17.04). The Tl level of FF was significantly associated with the high probability of blastocyst formation and high-quality blastocysts (RR: 2.83, 95 % CI: 0.92∼7.95; RR: 3.12, 95 % CI: 0.64, 12.84). The Hg level (RR: 3.98, 95 % CI: 0.78∼14.77) and the Ba level in serum (RR: 12.75 95 % CI: 1.31∼89.71) were significantly correlated with high-quality blastocysts. The levels of Ni, Cu, Mo in seminal plasma of men were significantly correlated with blastocyst formation and high-quality blastocysts (RR values were all greater than 1.5). In addition, the level of Ba was significantly correlated with the high probability of blastocyst formation (RR: 1.7, 95 % CI: 1.14∼2.52).ConclusionOur results reveal that Cr, Ba and Pb may affect TSC, TMC and MII oocytes. Moreover, Ba, Cr, As, Hg and Tl in serum and Mo in seminal plasma were related to fertilization results, good embryos, blastocyst formation, high-quality embryos, and pregnancy and live birth rates. Tl in FF may related to the quality of embryonic development, Ba was an important risk factor which closely related to the outcomes of IVF in both male and female. Through our detection and statistical analysis of clinical samples, it is shown that although not all elements will affect the outcome of IVF the key elements we have selected need to arouse our attention, which benifit to the diagnosis and prevention of clinical infertility.  相似文献

The enzymatic activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has been shown to be altered by environmental contaminants such as metals. However, the available literature illustrates a background of contradictory results regarding these effects. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of five metal ions (nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and mercury) to inhibit AChE activity in vitro. First, to accomplish this objective, the possible interference of metals as test toxicants in the Ellman's assay, which is widely used to assess AChE activity, was studied. The potential influence of two different reaction buffers (phosphate and Tris) was also determined. The results suggest that the selected metals react with the products of this photometric technique. It is impossible to ascertain the artefactual contribution of the interaction of the metals with the technique when measuring AChE inhibition. This constitutes a major obstacle in obtaining accurate data. The presence of phosphate ions also makes enzymatic inhibition difficult to analyse. Attending to this evidence, an assay using the substrate o-nitrophenyl acetate and Tris buffer was used to investigate the effects of metals on AChE activity. O-nitrophenyl acetate is also a substrate for esterases other than cholinesterases. It is therefore only possible to use it for the measurement of cholinesterase activity with purified enzymes or after a previous verification of the absence of other esterases in the sample tissue. Under these conditions, the results indicate that with the exception of nickel, all tested metals significantly inhibit AChE activity.  相似文献

BackgroundThis study aimed to track the toxic ions released by MTA Fillapex, BioRoot RCS, and an experimental tricalcium silicate-based sealer (CEO) into local and distant tissues as well as to investigate their potential adverse effects. In addition, the chemical constituents of the sealers were also evaluated. The main components of the dry powders, pastes, and mixed sealers were characterized.Material and methodsDry powder and sealer discs were each set for 72 h and their main components were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealers were used to measure silicon and calcium ions. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealers or empty tubes were implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of Wistar rats. On days 7, 15, 30, and 45, the animals were euthanized and their brains, livers, kidneys, and subcutaneous tissues were removed and processed to determine the concentrations of chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, iron, magnesium and nickel using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer.ResultsThe main compounds in all sealers were carbon, oxygen, silicon, and calcium. MTA Fillapex release more Si while highest levels of Si were found in presence of BioRoot. The release of Si and Ca ions promoted by MTA Fillapex raise by time. No traces of cobalt, chromium, or magnesium were detected in any tissue. Irrespective of the sealer, no traces of copper and lead were found in the subcutaneous tissue; however, they were observed in the organs. The highest concentration of iron was identified in the liver. All sealers exhibited similar nickel traces in the brain, kidney, and liver except for MTA Fillapex, which demonstrated levels higher than CEO in the subcutaneous tissue on day 7. Tracing nickel ions over time revealed that lowest concentrations were found in subcutaneous tissue.ConclusionTaken together, our data demonstrate that CEOs have chemical compositions similar to those of other commercial sealers. Furthermore, none of them exhibited a threat to systemic health. Moreover, the minimal amounts of iron and nickel detected were not related to the sealers.  相似文献

Abstract

The development of effective strategies to rehabilitate compromised environments is one of the major challenges facing the postindustrial society, since most of the habitats are becoming progressively polluted due to indiscriminate discharge of contaminants generated by anthropogenic activities. Several aquatic photosynthetic organisms can be used to treat wastewaters in primary and tertiary treatments, including cyanobacteria, algae and higher plants. In this review, we summarize the results obtained in the remediation of polluted waters by photosynthetic organisms and discuss the future perspective of phytoremediation.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations in the canonical ensemble have been performed to calculate structural and transport properties of liquid alkali metals. The alkali metals considered in this work were Na, K, Rb and Cs. Two Yukawa-type potentials were employed as the interaction law among particles. This function is written in terms of two adjustment parameters which make possible tuning the softness of the potential core and the range of the attractive part. The radial distribution functions and transport properties such as self-diffusion and shear viscosity, were calculated in a thermodynamic state near the melting point. The radial distribution function calculated for each alkali metal was compared with previous simulation results where a more elaborated potential was employed. From this comparison we found an excellent agreement. Our results for transport properties were also compared with the available experimental data and a good agreement was found.  相似文献

Abstract

Concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu and Fe) in surface sediments and their partitioning behaviour between exchangeable, reducible (Fe-Mn oxide bound) and organic/residual phases of the sediments in a typical backwater system of Kerala, viz. the southern upstream part of Cochin Estuarine System (South India), have been studied. Spatial and temporal variations of trace metals are discussed with special reference to pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, organic carbon and texture of sediment. Metal concentrations in the tide gated part of the estuary were found to be significantly higher when compared to metal concentrations reported from the unrestricted part of the Cochin estuarine system and also those from many of the unpolluted estuaries worldwide. The higher levels of heavy metals in the study area and their characteristic distribution and partitioning behaviour in the surficial sediments were attributed to the presence of a salinity barrier across the backwater system and also by the massive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the vast area of agricultural land near the backwater system.  相似文献

Distribution and magnitude of arsenic and metals in surface sediments collected from the coastal and estuarine areas of the southern Bohai Sea, China, were investigated. Sediments from the estuarine and coastal areas of the Jie and Xiaoqing Rivers contained highest concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper, mercury, and zinc. Mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Cd were higher than background concentrations determined for the areas. The magnitude of both enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) suggested that pollution with As and metals was occurring along estuarine and coastal areas of the southern Bohai Sea. Risk analysis also suggested that concentrations of As and metals were sufficiently elevated as to cause adverse biological effects in the study area. According to the ecological risk index (RI) values, the upstream of the Jie River has a very high ecological risk for the waterbody. The data provided in this study are considered crucial for controlling and remediation of As and metals’ pollution of the southern Bohai Sea.  相似文献
